Friday Photo – August 11, 2017

The actual flower is the plant’s highest fulfillment, and are not here exclusively for herbaria, county floras and plant geography: they are here first of all for delight.

Today’s Friday Photo features the lush flora that exists throughout Fish Canyon which is located in Duarte, California. This particular spot is on the Fish Canyon Waterfall Trail, looking down into Fish Creek. It’s a 5-mile out and back hike with about 850 feet of elevation gain, and made for a beautiful day hike. I took this photo about three months before the trail was destroyed in the Fish Fire on June 20, 2016. It is currently closed to the public, however efforts are being made by the US Forestry Service to restore the trail, and the reopening date is tentatively September 8, 2017. A rather odd time for reopening one of the ten most popular waterfall trails in the Southern California. In September, the trail will be very hot and we’ll be lucky to see a trickle of water from the falls.  The best time to hike this trail is in late fall thru spring. This is when the falls are putting on their best water show. Still it will be great to set foot in this beautiful area once again.
